Approach to Reading

The children have opportunities for independent reading, shared reading during our literacy lesson, guided reading groups and reading for pleasure. The reading that occurs across KS2 develops and extends the skills that children have acquired during KS1, particularly in Read Write Inc. sessions.

Using our Wordsmith Literacy Units, the children explore a wide range of genres, both fiction and non-fiction, which allows them to access, input ideas and understand what they are reading. These texts also allow children to develop their vocabulary through class discussions. They are given opportunities to speculate on the tone and purpose of texts they explore as well as to consider both the themes and audience.

KS1 Reading Scheme

Children in KS1 begin to read a wide range of books that are levelled according to the 'book bands'.

We value the partnership between home and school and encourage parents to hear children read regularly at home.
